Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer

Mothers’ of Hope Resource Center (MOHRC) mission is to clothe, educate, empower, encourage, and sustain women and children survivors of breast cancer and domestic violence. During the past ten years we have assisted over two hundred women and their children.  We are one of the few agencies that services both Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer.

There are many women and children in this new year that suffer from a lack of food, clothing, adequate heating, and the daily necessities needed to maintain a normal life. Even more, enduring a traumatic experience effects the emotional and mental wellbeing of a person; making it difficult to enjoy normal, everyday activities.  Our goal is to give 50 more families an opportunity to transition into the new year with proper care.

BREAST CANCER STATISTICS

About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

About 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2019. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 883.

Breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. began decreasing in the year 2000, after increasing for the previous two decades. They dropped by 7% from 2002 to 2003 alone. One theory is that this decrease was partially due to the reduced use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women after the results of a large study called the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002. These results suggested a connection between HRT and increased breast cancer risk.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE STATISTICS

Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten.

Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.

Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.

Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup.
